Golden beaches, incredible food, ancient ruins, and breathtaking natural parks are just a few of the reasons why Sri Lanka has become one of Asia’s most popular destinations in recent years.
Thankfully, it is simple for Americans to obtain a visa for Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) only takes a few minutes to apply for and saves travelers the unnecessary hassle of queueing at the border to complete the application for a visa on arrival.
What is the Sri Lanka ETA for US Citizens?
The Sri Lanka ETA for US citizens allows travelers to enter for up to 30 days for tourism or a range of other purposes. The new travel authorization was introduced as a faster, more efficient alternative to the visa on arrival which speeds up the visa application process.
The online ETA application just involves answering some basic questions and paying a fee using a credit or debit card. Applicants receive the approved ETA by email.
What purposes can you enter for with a Sri Lanka ETA
The Sri Lanka ETA allows Americans to enter for the following purposes:
- For a holiday or visiting friends or relatives
- For Medical treatment including some alternative treatments and yoga
- To take part in sporting or cultural events, competitions or activities
- To transit through Sri Lanka (maximum stay of 2 days in Sri Lanka)
The Sri Lankan ETA cannot be used to work or live in Sri Lanka. US citizens need to obtain a different type of visa from a Sri Lankan embassy or consulate for these purposes (see the full list of US embassies and consulates at the bottom of the page).
What Documents are Required to Americans to Apply for the Sri Lanka ETA?
US citizens must meet all the visa requirements to be able to apply for a Sri Lanka ETA from the US. In addition to completing the application form, applicants need to:
- Possess a valid US passport with at least 6 months remaining
- Pay a fee using a credit or debit card
- Provide a current email address to receive the ETA
When entering Sri Lanka, travelers need to provide the following documentation at the Sri Lankan border:
- A printed copy of the approved Sri Lanka ETA
- Proof of sufficient funds to cover the trip
- Return or onward ticket
How to Obtain the Sri Lanka Visa for American Citizens
The online application form just involves answering some basic questions with information such as personal details (name, address, date of birth etc.), passport details (number, expiry date etc.), and travel plans. There are also some health and security-related questions.
Applicants also need to pay a fee using a credit or debit card to submit the application. Once the application has been approved, the approved Sri Lanka ETA is sent to travelers by email.
