Apply for Sri Lanka

The majority of foreign citizens are required to obtain a Sri Lanka visa before traveling. In the case of passport holders from a large number of countries, the Sri Lanka visa application can be completed online before traveling, allowing the applicant to receive a Sri Lanka ETA directly via email. By applying for an online Sri Lanka visa, travelers can avoid lengthy waits for a visa on arrival at border entry points.

What Is the Sri Lanka Visa?

sri lanka visaEligible foreign citizens visiting the country for short stays can apply for the Sri Lanka ETA through a simple online form. This Electronic Travel Authorization, similar to the United States ESTA system, was introduced in 2012 in order to expedite the process of getting a visa for Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lanka visa online is valid for a stay of up to 30 days for either tourism or business purposes, or up to 2 days for transit purposes. Once in the country and before the ETA expires, travelers have the option to renew the validity for up to an additional 6-month stay.

Travelers coming to Sri Lanka for a short stay who are not from countries eligible for the ETA are required to apply at a Sri Lankan Embassy or Consulate before their trip. This could be a Sri Lanka tourist visa, a Sri Lanka business visa, or another visa type depending on the purpose and duration of their stay.

Who Needs a Visa for Sri Lanka?

Citizens of all countries traveling to Sri Lanka are required to get a Sri Lanka visa before their trip, with the exception of 3 visa-exempt countries (the Maldives, the Seychelles, and Singapore). Citizens of 21 countries are obliged to get a visa in advance from a Sri Lankan Embassy or Consulate in their country of residence, including Egypt, Syria, and Uganda.

All other foreign passport holders have the option to get a Sri Lanka visa on arrival or apply for the Sri Lanka online visa before travel for tourism or business purposes. However, the latter is strongly advised in order to avoid long processing times upon arrival in Sri Lanka.

Passport holders from all of the following countries are eligible to apply for the Sri Lanka visa online:
